Rich History
Southlands was built in the 1920s for the Hodder family and later purchased by businessman Sid Levine, famous for his showbiz connections and legendary house parties attended by celebrities like Bob Hope and Sammy Davis Jr.
However, the real historical significance of Southlands lies in Sid’s son, Ian Levine, a renowned Northern Soul DJ. Ian’s famous trip to America resulted in him buying up rare 7-inch soul singles, which he stored in the house’s downstairs toilet. Many of these records were played at the Blackpool Mecca Highland room where Ian was the DJ, and they have since become classic genre staples still played at Northern Soul nights today.
Renaissance
After the Levines left, subsequent owners let the house fall into disrepair. But in 2000, a local family who still owns the property purchased Southlands and took on the daunting task of completely renovating the whole house from top to bottom. The family carefully considered the interiors with the aim of bringing this wonderful home back to its former glory.
They also had the gardens landscaped and designed by a leading garden designer and Chelsea finalist. Today, Southlands stands as a testament to the resilience of its owners and the enduring legacy of its history.
